How the Word Counter works

A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, so hyphenated words and numbers each count as one word, the same way most word processors count. Characters are counted with and without spaces, sentences are split at periods, question marks and exclamation marks, and paragraphs are blocks of text separated by blank lines.

Everything is counted locally in your browser, so you can safely check private documents. For typical targets: a tweet is up to 280 characters, a blog post is often 1,000 to 2,000 words, and a college essay commonly 500 to 650 words.
