GUID Validator

Check whether a value is a valid GUID/UUID and see its version and variant, instantly in your browser.

How to use the GUID Validator

  1. Copy the GUID or UUID from your code, database, log file or URL.
  2. Paste it into the box. Braces and hyphens are optional.
  3. Click Run to see whether it's valid, along with its version and variant.

How the GUID Validator works

A GUID (globally unique identifier, Microsoft's name for a UUID) is 128 bits written as 32 hexadecimal digits, usually grouped 8-4-4-4-12. The validator accepts the value with or without surrounding braces and hyphens and checks that it contains exactly 32 hex digits.

It then reads two special positions. The first digit of the third group is the version: 1 is time-based, 4 is random, and 7 is time-ordered random. The first digit of the fourth group encodes the variant; standard RFC 4122 UUIDs start with 8, 9, A or B there, while other values indicate legacy NCS or Microsoft formats.
