Hash Generator
Generate MD5, SHA-256, or SHA-512 hashes from text, instantly in your browser.
How to use the Hash Generator
- Type or paste the text you want to hash.
- Choose the algorithm: MD5, SHA-256 or SHA-512.
- Tick Uppercase if you need capital hex letters.
- Click Run to see the hash as a hexadecimal string.
How the Hash Generator works
A cryptographic hash function turns input of any length into a fixed-length fingerprint: 128 bits for MD5, 256 bits for SHA-256 and 512 bits for SHA-512, shown as 32, 64 and 128 hex characters. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing a single character changes it completely.
Text is encoded as UTF-8 first. SHA-256 and SHA-512 use your browser's built-in Web Crypto API; MD5 is computed by a small JavaScript implementation, since browsers don't offer it natively. MD5 is fine for checksums but is broken for security purposes, and none of these should be used on their own to store passwords; use bcrypt for that.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this tool free?
- Yes. Generate hashes at no cost, with no account required.
- Does my text leave my browser?
- No. Hashing runs entirely client-side using your browser's built-in cryptography, so your text is never sent to a server.
- Which algorithm should I use?
- SHA-256 is a good default for general-purpose hashing. MD5 is fast but no longer considered secure against collisions, so avoid it for security-sensitive use cases.
