How the Data Storage Converter works
A byte is 8 bits. This converter uses binary multiples, where each step up is 1,024 times the previous one: 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB, and so on up to petabytes. This is the convention Windows and most operating systems use when reporting file and memory sizes.
Drive manufacturers often use decimal units instead (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), which is why a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GB on your computer. The same data, two different definitions.
