How the Retirement Calculator works
The calculator projects two things month by month until your retirement age: your existing savings growing with monthly compounding at the expected return, and each new monthly contribution being added and then growing for the remaining time. The total is the future value of your current savings plus the future value of a series of monthly contributions.
The projection is in nominal terms and assumes a steady return, which real markets don't deliver. To see what the result would be worth in today's money, run it through the Inflation Calculator, and revisit the numbers as your income and contributions change.
